Dog-Friendly Summer Holiday

Dog-Friendly Summer Holiday

Earlier this month Baby Belle and I packed up our suitcases and went to mid-Wales for a holiday by the seaside.  Belle's first trip to the beach back in March was a great success and this time we took even more dogs with us to play in the sand and sea for a Shropshire Dog Walks weekend away.

A grand total of 28 Shropshire dogs and all their owners descended on Fairbourne beach on the Saturday morning and even the dull weather didn't dampen anyone's spirits as the dogs ran around playing and had a great time exploring the beach and the dunes before we sat down on the sand for a tasty picnic together.  In the afternoon we went to the very dog-friendly George the Third pub in Penmaenpool for refreshements as we hid under cover watching the sky rain down over the beautiful Mawddach Estuary.

The following day we all headed a little further down the coast to Aberdovey beach where the sun came out to greet us and we spent a glorious day playing in the sea and eating ice creams. In Aberdovey our very large group split up for lunch with some choosing to have fish and chips on the sea front whilst others went to the lovely Medina Cafe which had outdoor seating where the dogs were made very welcome. That afternoon the group split up again for some shorter walks with some heading into the hills behind Aberdovey in search of the Bearded Lake (so called because it is covered in water-lillies in the summer), others took the train to Barmouth, and the rest joined Baby Belle and me in visiting the Dolgoch Falls.  I went to these waterfalls for the first time back in March when I visited this area and they were truly spectacular and I couldn't wait to show some of my friends around - and they were all equally as impressed as I first was!  Thanks to the rainfall the day before the falls were in full flow and quite simply breathtaking in places - I highly recommend you take the time to visit if you're ever in the area.  That evening we headed back to the George in Penmaenpool for a very tasty dinner with the dogs curled up fast asleep at our feet and the World Cup Final on a big screen in the bar.

Baby Belle and I spent the rest of the week exploring the area with some of our friends who had also chosen to stay longer than the weekend.  We climbed the steep hill behind Fairbourne to an old slate quarry which hides a spectacular lake behind a cliff.  You have to literally walk through a slate tunnel to get to Blue Lake and it is well worth the effort as the water is crystal blue and once inside the cliff you feel like you could be anywhere in the world.  I went back a second time later in the week with my swimming costume and went for a quick swim - IT WAS FREEZING!  But lots of fun!  We also walked part of the estuary trail from Fairbourne to Morfa Mawwdach but sadly one of Belle's doggy pals cut his paw on the walk so we had to take a detour back to visit the local vets to have him bandaged up.  We made the most of a glorious sunny day to visit Twywn Broad Water and walked along the estuary and across miles of sand dunes and then on a wet and rainy day we drove into Barmouth with a friend and her dog and had a very tasty lunch at The Last Inn.  We sat at one of their indoor window box seats watching the rain come down over the estuary and enjoyed their 'catch of the day' menu.

Baby Belle came everywhere with me during the week, there were plenty of dog friendly places to choose from to eat and drink and there are miles of dog friendly beaches to be explored along the coast from Barmouth to Aberdovey.

If you would like some inspiration for holidaying with your dog then please check out Phileas Dogg's Guide to Dog Friendly Holidays in Britain which is for sale in our online shop.  Phileas Dogg provides you with lots of ideas for places to visit and stay across the country and they all come with his paw of approval.

Finally, wherever you are in the country if you are looking for a place to stop for refreshments where your dog is welcome too, then please download our Best Dog Pubs app onto your iPhone or Android smart phone.  If you do visit any of the pubs listed (or if you find a new one) then please write a review on the app for others to see so we can all make use of this great doggy resource.

Baby Belle and I had a wonderful holiday and we hope that you all have a great summer too.  Thanks for taking the time to read our post.

Best wishes and arrooo's from Baby Belle and Deborah x
